Many people believe that masturbation affects a man's testosterone levels, but this is not necessarily true. Masturbation does not seem to have any long-lasting effects on testosterone levels. However, masturbation may have short-term effects on the levels of this hormone. It also affects other factors, such as sex drive. Masturbation does not typically pose a threat to any other aspects of a person's physical health.

Although higher testosterone levels are seen with abstinence, orgasm does not acutely affect testosterone levels in the blood. Biochemical markers do not differ significantly when comparing orgasm after abstinence and orgasm without abstinence. Testosterone has minimal interactions with orgasm, but is seen as a positive regulator of sexual desire or libido alongside dopamine. The actual ejaculatory process and erection process is mediated by serotonin and Nitric Oxide, as well as various mechanical contractions in the pelvic and penile region. This current study examined the effect of a 3-week period of sexual abstinence on the neuroendocrine response to masturbation-induced orgasm. Hormonal and cardiovascular parameters were examined in ten healthy adult men during sexual arousal and masturbation-induced orgasm. Blood was drawn continuously and cardiovascular parameters were constantly monitored. This procedure was conducted for each participant twice, both before and after a 3-week period of sexual abstinence. Plasma was subsequently analysed for concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol, prolactin, luteinizing hormone and testosterone concentrations.
One common questions about masturbation is if it can increase testosterone in men. Several researches have been done to find the answer to that question. Experts say that the truth is that testosterone levels are not as simple as being solely affected by masturbation, or even by abstinence. A study supports this statement when they subjected male participants to both sessions of masturbation and a period of abstinence.
