Registered Sex Offenders In an effort to safeguard our children and our neighborhoods, the State of Maine maintains a registry of convicted sex offenders, living in Portland, who qualify under the "Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act of The individuals listed on the state's registry are not wanted by the police. They have served the sentence imposed upon them by the court for their conviction although some may still be on probation.
The Law took effect on January 1, , and protects the residents of Maine from re-offending sex offenders. Sex offenders in the state must register within 5 days after getting out of jail or receiving court notification. Duration of registration ranges from 10 years to a lifetime for the legislation. The legislation got modified on January 1, , with new changes to the previous legislation. The new law classifies sex offenders into 3 tiers:.
